What is a datalogger?

The primary use of a datalogger in general is to collect and record information in realtime so that it can be analyzed later. Typically there are two types of dataloggers. The first are stand alone dataloggers. They use their own sensors to obtain data requiring you to run wires everywhere you want a sensor. These units usually have a very high acquisition rate and very good accuracy as well as a very high price tag. They require a lot of work to install and wire.

The second type of datalogger is one that plugs into an existing system. Our PocketLOGGER line of dataloggers are designed to read data right from either the car's ECU (DSM and OBDII) or other modules with a data port (ZT) and record it. The data is obtained from the sensors already installed in the car and that the ECU or other modules are already reading. All that needs to be done is to connect the PocketLOGGER cable to the equipment through an already existing connector. Installation and wiring of additional sensors is not required like with the stand alone dataloggers.
