How to reset a Palm handheld
Under normal use, you should not have to use the reset button located on the back of your Palm(tm) handheld. On rare occasions, however, your handheld may not respond to taps on the screen. In this case, you need to perform a reset to get your handheld running again.
The Palm handheld can be reset in three different ways:
A Soft Reset
A Warm Reset
A Hard Reset
Performing a Soft Reset
A Soft reset tells your handheld to stop what it is doing and start over again. All records and entries stored in your handheld are retained with a Soft reset. After a Soft reset, the Palm logo screen appears, followed by the General Preferences screen.
To perform a Soft reset, do the following:
- Use the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip) to gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.
Performing a Warm Reset
A Warm reset bypasses any system extensions (such as hacks, OS patches, etc.) that are loaded on your handheld. Performing a Warm reset often bypasses the "boot loop" error, and allows you to remove any recently installed third party applications that might be causing the problem.
To perform a Warm reset, do the following:
- Press and hold the Page Up button on your handheld.
- Use the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or a similar object without a sharp tip), gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.
- When the Palm logo appears on the screen, release the Page Up button.
Performing a Hard Reset
With a Hard reset, all records and entries stored in your handheld are erased. Formats, preferences and other settings are restored to their factory default settings. You can restore any data previously synchronized with your computer during the next HotSync(r) operation. You should re-install your 3rd party applications unless you are using Palm OS(r) 3.3 (or higher) or a third party backup solution that automatically backs up and restores installed applications. Never perform a Hard reset unless a Soft or Warm reset does not solve your problem.
To perform a Hard reset, do the following:
- Hold down the power button on the front panel of the handheld.
- While holding down the power button, use the tip of an unfolded paper clip (or similar object without a sharp tip) to gently press the reset button inside the hole on the back panel of your handheld.
- Release the reset button.
- When the Palm logo appears on the screen, release the power button.
- When the message appears on the screen warning that you are about to erase all the data stored on your handheld, do one of the following: Press the page up button on the front panel of the handheld to complete the Hard reset and display the Digitizer screen or press any other button to perform a Soft reset.
